We’re used to loads of family drama on Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi’s Wedding, but one thing we most definitely weren’t expecting from the RHoA spin-off was painful moments from the reality star’s past.
We’ve long known that Kandi Burruss’ older brother, Patrick, died in a car accident when she was just a teenager, but she’s not one to talk about the tragedy often, so that’s why we were surprised when, on the June 22 episode, Kandi and Mama Joyce decided to go and visit Patrick’s grave.
Kandi talked to Bravotv.com about that emotional journey and how her brother’s shocking death affected her. “I was extremely close to my brother. He was the best big brother in the whole wide world,” she recalled. “When he died, that was the worst moment in my entire life. There's no way to describe it to anyone, and it's a hard thing to even share with people. My brother passed when I was 15, and I don't think you're the same anymore after you lose someone who's that close to you. You realize anyone can go at any time.”
Kandi went on to explain that she doesn’t think the visit to Patrick’s grave really helped Mama Joyce accept that the wedding was happening, but she’s still glad that they did it. “I don't think that moment helped my mom be more OK with the wedding, but I definitely feel that any time she's able to talk about my brother or talk about his death, it does make her feel better,” Kandi noted. “I don’t think she was any happier about me getting married, but I was happy that she decided to walk me down the aisle. I was shocked actually.”
It couldn’t have been easy for Kandi or Mama Joyce to share that raw graveside visit with viewers, so we applaud them for doing so. Even if it didn’t succeed at getting Joyce prepped for Kandi’s big day, it was still a crucial mother-daughter bonding moment.
What do you think of Kandi and Mama Joyce’s trip to Patrick’s grave: Was it too much for TV, or do you admire them for being open about something so painful? Feel free to weigh in below.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta: Kandi’s Wedding finale airs July 6 at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo.
