Kanye West: “I’m the Number One Rock Star on the Planet”

Kanye West is a great many things, including talented, rich, and dating Kim Kardashian, but humble he is not.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1 that aired on Monday, the rapper, who has been known to toot his own horn in the past, gave some impressively immodest soundbites to interviewer Zane Lowe, lauding himself as “the number one rock star on the planet,” while complaining about the limitations placed on him by society.

Kanye explains, “I've got to a point that Michael Jackson did not break down. I have reached the glass ceiling, as a creative person, as a celebrity… and I've been at it for 10 years,” adding that his acceptance by mainstream culture was indication of how we’re now “in a civil rights movement.”

Despite his many successes, Kanye says that he often feels jealous of his mentor Jay Z’s ability to reach multiple audiences without sparking the backlash that Kanye’s erratic behavior often prompts.

“Jay Z is more realized than me. More of his dreams and aspirations have come true,” says Kanye. “You don't realize I am so frustrated. Like, I've got so much I want to give…And I've got a million people telling me why I can't do it."

While he may not have the recognition Jay Z has, Kanye says he has something better: Kim.

“She gave me everything, she gave me family, she gave me a support system. She was in a powerful enough situation where she could love me without asking me for money, which is really hard for me to find."

At the end of the day, it seems he’s not entirely displeased with his lot in life, despite his creative frustrations.

"Rap is the new rock 'n' roll,” he says. “We are the real rock stars and I'm the biggest of all of them. I'm the number one rock star on the planet."
