As the pregnant Kim Kardashian clock ticks down, we’re wondering what will happen after the birth. Also, what will happen to the afterbirth? That’s right: the question of the hour. Will Kim Kardashian eat her placenta?
As grossed out as the idea may make us, Kim wouldn’t be the first celebrity to take a bite. In fact, eating your own placenta appears to be a time-honored tradition among the hallowed hills of Hollywood, right up there with practicing Scientology and envying Meryl Streep.
Betty Draper Did What?!
When January Jones gave birth to son Xander in 2011, the Mad Men actress couldn’t get enough of her sac of a snack. But before you imagine Betty Draper sitting down with knife and fork, never fear: Pills are the typical way to consume placenta (there’s a phrase we never thought we’d write).
“Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins,” January explained to People. “It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.”
January now wishes she’d kept the news private but recommends the practice to all her fellow ladies. Duly noted.
Hold Your Horses, Holly
The most recent mama with the munchies, former Playboy model Holly Madison announced her plans to placenta it up via her blog back in February.
“This might sound gross, but I’m totally planning on having my placenta turned into pills I can take after giving birth,” she wrote. “I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!”
Kim’s said she’s interested in the menu option for similar reasons, but word to the wise: there’s no clear scientific link between eating your baby-making oven liner and bouncing back into shape despite the supposed benefits.
Talk About Composting
When Matthew McConaughey’s baby mama Camila Alves was expecting first son Levi in 2008, the always out there surfer dude got a bit carried away with his brainstorming.
“It’s going to be in the orchards and it’s going to bear some wonderful fruit,” he told CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta about his plans to plant the placenta in his home garden.
Well, at least he didn’t make dinner.
So there you have it. Kim will be in mighty fine company if she decides to use what being a mama gave her. Do you think she will? Weigh in below.
