Kanye West has never been as comfortable living in the public eye as his girlfriend Kim Kardashian (and who is?), but it still raised eyebrows when he appeared on her reality show....almost never.

His clear avoidance of Kimmy’s show has led to a lot of speculation: He hates what she does, he and Kim spend no time together, yadda yadda yadda. But in a recent interview with the New York Times, Kanye opened up about the scene that soured him on reality television: His on-camera overhaul of Kim’s closet.

“That was from a place of love,” Kanye explained. “It’s hard when people read things in a lot of different ways. You know, the amount of backlash I got from it is when I decided to not be on the show anymore. And it’s not that I have an issue with the show; I just have an issue with the amount of backlash that I get. Because I just see like, an amazing person that I’m in love with that I want to help.”

Thinking back on the media explosion that followed that sweet little scene, we don’t fault Kanye for keeping his distance from the KUWTK cameras. More than that, we don’t doubt his love for Kimmy.

When his relationship was mentioned, mid-interview, it was in the context of how his love life affects his music.

Any woman that you’re in love with or that loves you is going to command a certain amount of, you know, energy,” Kanye said. “It’s actually easier to focus, in some ways.”

“I’m the type of soul that likes to be in love and likes to be able to focus,” he went on. “And that inspires me.”
