Our hearts have been overflowing for a week now, since Kim Kardashian gave birth to baby girl North and we’ve been flooded with stories about her adoring daddy Kanye West. Then, in an interview with W Magazine, Kanye took things to the next level of adorable by calling Kim his true love in an interview! It’s almost too much.

But in that same W Magazine interview, Kanye also shared some insider info on a less-than-perfect relationship in his life, with Kim’s mom, Kris Jenner.

There have been all kinds of tabloid stories about tension between these two, and they’re mostly about how Kris wants to make money off the family and Kanye wants his privacy. Most of the rumors have been pretty easy to dismiss, but then W’s Christopher Bagley saw a pretty awkward exchange between the two. Here’s what went down:

Bagley was hanging out on assignment with Kanye in his Paris apartment one night. A very pregnant Kim had just flown back to the States, but her brother Rob was apparently lounging on Kanye’s couch with his girlfriend, when Kris popped by for a visit. After marveling at his fancy Paris pad, Kris got an early listen to “Awesome,” an unfinished song for ‘Ye’s album Yeezus, that was about Kim.

Jenner’s response to the song? "Great job!"

As Bagley tells it, Kanye wasn’t exactly thrilled with her assessment. "Great job?” he teased. “Great job, Baccarat, for making a glass that can hold liquid! Great job, belt loops, for keeping my pants up!"

Soon after, Kris apparently got up to leave, told Kanye she loved him and that he should call her at her hotel the next day. "It seems apparent to everyone, including Jenner, that West will not call," Bagley wrote.

Ouch! Sure, we’ve all done the “I’ll call you!” thing when we didn’t totally mean it, but not in front of a magazine reporter! Then again, Kanye welcomed Kris into his home, and played her a song, and relationships with future-mothers-in-law are often less than perfect. We’ll let this one slide.
