You know you've made it when even the President is talking smack about you.
While Kim Kardashian and Kanye West may be rich, beautiful, and admired by fans worldwide, President Obama says that their over-the-top lifestyles are tearing the American Dream to shreds. So how, exactly, are they accomplishing this monumental feat?
In an interview for Amazon Singles (via Red Alert Politics), the Commander-in-Chief explained that, when he was growing up, living well meant something different than it does to many people today, and that current pop culture ideals often skew the public's opinion of what it means to succeed.
"The reason was because the American Dream involved some pretty basic stuff," said the POTUS, including jobs, homes, education and healthcare on his list of what used to make up a good life. "But I don't think people went around saying to themselves, 'I need to have a 10,000 square-foot house.'"
"We weren't exposed to things we didn't have in the same way that kids these days are," he added. "There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Kids weren't monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success."
The American Dream: from a house and a job to a career built on sex tape notoriety and million-dollar bed purchases. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
