Kanye West's passionate and dark performance of "Blood on the Leaves" at the 2013 MTV VMAs came just days after he released a photo of crazy-adorable baby North West. More importantly, this was his very first since North's birth on June 15, 2013. Kanye kicked off his performance under an ominous red light and then rapped (and growled) and danced around in silhouette in the dark against a projected forest background. Artsy and intense, is all we can say! Kanye's performance was a nice and stripped-down contrast to the glittery, multi-artist fare that is typical of the MTV VMAs.
Strangely, it was '90s TV icon Jared Leto (of 30 Seconds to Mars) who introduced Kanye, "The next performer has been called the '#1 Living and Breathing Rockstar', the 'Michael Jordan of Music', '100% Jimmy Hendrix', 'Complete Awesomeness', 'The Nucleus' and — of course, of course — a 'God'. And those are just the things he said about himself." Sounds accurate enough!
One thing we didn't see from Kanye at this year's VMAs was another Taylor Swift interruption. We see that fatherhood has really given the new dad a lot of perspective. Of the incident, Kanye commented on Kris, "That’s the last thing I’d want for my daughter is a crazy, drunk black guy in a leather shirt interrupting her."
Kimmy, who was not in NYC with her boyfriend, tweeted her support from afar, "Best performance of the night @kanyewest !!!!!!!!!"
Kim wasn't the only one loving his performance. Comedian Kevin Hart gave Yeezus a thumbs up during the awards cereomy, "Shout out to Kanye [...] His performance was crazy. Kanye is really into that whole God thing 'cause you can see him, but like, you don't know if he's there. It was like a shadow — I loved it!" But what did you guys think? Awesome or a let-down?
