Up until now, reports of Lamar Odom's descent into a cycle of addiction and infidelity have been little more than speculation and rumor, but finally, a member of Lamar’s inner circle has stepped forward to confirm that the NBA star is battling some serious demons.

Lamar’s father, Joe Odom, a former addict himself, opened up to PEOPLE about his son’s recent troubles staying clean.

Joe told the magazine that the situation is “really hectic,” but his son is currently “doing okay.”  While it seems that Lamar may be out of the eye of the storm, Joe made it clear that Lamar’s problems should not be trivialized, saying, “it’s been real serious.”

A confidante, who chose not to be identified, added that, while Lamar and wife Khloe Kardashian are still working toward repairing the damage done by his alleged affairs, his sobriety takes precedence.

“Whatever they’re going through is taking a backseat to getting him better.  His well-being comes first,” says the friend, who adds that the rest of Khloe’s family was unaware of the couple’s marital troubles until recently. “She’s kept this secret for almost two years, trying to save Lamar and their marriage.”

The major obstacle in treating Lamar’s addiction, in addition to his reluctance to accept help, is his dependency on multiple substances, which many sources have identified as crack, Ambien, and Oxycontin.

“To my understanding it isn’t any one drug, really, but that’s part of the problem,” says a friend of Lamar’s. “Lamar doesn’t think he has a specific ‘addiction.’  He says he likes to party but that he knows when to stop.”

For the moment, Khloe's main objective is saving her husband's life. “Khloe hasn’t made any decisions yet about what to do [with their marriage],” says a friend.  “Right now she’s just leaning toward trying to get him help.”

“She’s ashamed,” adds another insider.  “She’s scared.”
