We’re about to let you know something shocking: most celebrities don’t pen their books without a little help.
Although that may be common knowledge to most of us, it seems as though some of Kylie and Kendall Jenner ’s fans missed the memo, and have been more than little disappointed in how much of their recent book, Rebels: City of Indra, they actually wrote themselves.
While the Keeping Up With the Kardashians stars have plenty of fans defending their limited participation in the writing process, nobody is a more vocally supportive of the girls’ decision to collaborate with a professional author than their ghostwriter, Maya Sloan. She tells the LA Times of her decision to get involved with the Kardashian brand, “I've learned to check my ego. Ego will get you a teaching job in Iowa grading freshman comp papers, or a 9-to-5 editing promotional material where you want to slit your wrists. I'm writing for a living, and it's a gift to be a working writer.”
Despite the criticism from those who think Maya’s work with the Kardashians could be a career killer, the girls themselves have nothing but praise for their dedicated coauthor. “She's super smart and just kind of adapted to us — remembering what we said and the way we talked,” says Kylie.
While she has her detractors, the NYU professor says that she’s fine with being associated with both high and lowbrow work. “I can talk to you about Tolstoy and I can talk to you about Divergent,” she says. “I refuse the snobbery."
