Holly Robinson Peete knows a thing or two about being a black actress in Hollywood. Holly is best known for her turns on 21 Jump Street and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, and just this past year she won an NAACP Image Award for her children’s book, My Brother Charlie. In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Holly talks about Tyler Perry’s decision to cast Kim Kardashian in his latest film, The Marriage Counselor.

“We can always count on Tyler Perry to give a ‘blacktress’ a job,” Holly says about the director, who is famous for his movies highlighting strong African American female roles. Kim Kardashian has a minor role in The Marriage Counselor as the main character’s co-worker, and began filming in Atlanta earlier this week. Kim’s casting in the movie irks the female contingent of the African American acting community, Holly says. “All across the world ‘blacktresses’ are upset.”

Despite some ruffled feathers, Holly agrees that Kim’s casting is “actually pretty smart and the timing is great. Like her brand, this drama will be good for the film. So, it’s actually kind of brilliant in a way… I don’t have any problems with it.”
