We still can’t be sure one way or another whether Kim Kardashian was pursuing cosmetic injections during a recent visit to Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon Dr. Assassa. However, Wetpaint Entertainment spoke exclusively with another cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Raffi Hovsepian of the RHMD Plastic Surgery, about the potential risks associated with Botox and cosmetic fillers during pregnancy.
"I'm often asked whether or not it is safe to have fillers or Botox during a pregnancy,” says Dr. Hovsepian, who does not treat Kim. “My response, as would be the response of most Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, is to be extremely conservative and hold off on any elective procedures until after pregnancy. Why ever take a chance?”
“While wrinkle softeners (such as Botox) or injectable filling material (such as Juvéderm and Restylane) usually do not enter the circulation and therefore would not appear to be dangerous during pregnancy, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies of pregnant women.”
Dr. Hovsepian’s advice extends to pretty much “any non-essential service” a pregnant woman might seek.
“[Most plastic surgeons] would agree that we do not have 100% certainty as to all the interactions between these treatments (Juvéderm, Restylane, Botox, etc), the mother's body, and the fetus.”
What about non-invasive surgical procedures like Smart Lipo, a specialty of Dr. Assassa’s practice? “...If there is a cosmetic surgery being performed (such as SmartLipo, liposuction, breast augmentation, etc), nearly all the procedures require some form of anesthesia in which the chances of harming or aborting the fetus may be high,” Dr. Hovsepian asserts. “There are a variety of reasons why it makes no sense to have an elective procedure during pregnancy.”
What about procedures that are done under local anesthesia? “Even if an operation could be done under local anesthesia, the local anesthetic may get into the bloodstream and could possibly enter the fetal circulation. It is never wise to have a procedure while pregnant."
In that case, we really hope Kim’s visit was for something harmless, like a facial to enhance that natural pregnancy glow!
