Karina Smirnoff Wants Len Goodman’s Judge Job — If He Leaves

Len Goodman’s seat isn’t even cold — and it’s not official that he plans to let it get cold — but already at least two Dancing With the Stars pros are willing to take his place. Maybe that’s what ABC should do between the spring Season 18 and fall Season 19 — tape and air the job interviews for DWTS’s new head judge.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy has already said he’d accept a judging job on DWTS, since he’s finally fulfilled his dream of winning a Mirror Ball trophy. Karina Smirnoff, who left early on Season 18, is also interested — if Len leaves.

“There is a job opening,” Karina joked to OK! Magazine. “I’m going to send them my resume.” More seriously, she noted, “Len is the only judge out of the three that actually grew up in the ballroom world. We have Carrie Ann [Inaba] who knows performance and lifts and Bruno [Tonioli] obviously has judging qualities but Len is the ballroom person. I think we definitely need a ballroom person because it is a ballroom show. But, yeah, I’m totally going to campaign for that job now.”

She may have been joking about a campaign, but she does sound interested in judging. She also told OK! about her idea for eliminated pros to return the week after they get eliminated to be the next guest judges. “Our criticism is going to be very constructive because this is our job. This is what we do best,” she said. “I think it’s a great idea. I would’ve loved to do it this season they just didn’t let me.”

Maybe she’ll get her shot in Season 19. That would be a great balance for the pros — you get to still compete and stay creative with choreography and dancing, but also weigh in with your own critiques on what’s happening.

What do you think? We didn’t have Karina on our list of potential Len replacements, ‘cause we figured she’d be back for Season 19 as a competing pro. But maybe she’d rather judge, after winning her own Mirror Ball trophy in Season 13 and competing on the show since Season 3. Maks isn’t the only one who has other things he’d like to do. Fans shared other good replacement ideas too, including Louis van Amstel, who was on a previous guest judge list of ours, plus Kym Johnson, who has been judging the Australian version.

What do you think of having Karina as a judge? What about her idea for eliminated pros to return as the next guest judges?
