We think ABC should pay whatever they need to pay to keep the Grey's Anatomy actors on the show for as long as it endures, but one former cast member seems to have gotten too big for her britches. Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens) is close to the top of Forbes's list of Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actors — which compares the box office draw of stars' previous three movies against their paychecks.

"For every dollar she was paid, Heigl returned an average of $3.50," Forbes reports. "After films like 27 Dresses, Heigl was heralded as the new queen of romantic comedies. She started demanding a big upfront fee, and studios were willing to pay it… until flops like Killers and One For the Money."

While $3.50 earned per $1 spent sounds like a good investment, keep in mind that that is just at the box office and does not include the studio's other expenses.

Katherine dramatically left Grey's Anatomy in 2010, and her film career in the intervening years has been disappointing.

Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) sympathized with Katherine's plight in an October interview with New York Post: "You could understand why she wanted to go — when you're offered $12 million a movie and you’re only 26. [Editor's note: Katherine was actually 32 in 2010.] But Katie's problem is that she should not have renewed her contract. She re-upped, took a big raise, and then tried to get off the show. And then her movie career did not take off."

But Ellen also is relieved that she herself stayed on Grey's: "Actors always think the grass is greener somewhere else — I didn’t want to do that. I have an amazing life. I have a house five minutes from the studio, I have a house in the Hamptons, a house in Malibu, a beautiful daughter whom I see every night, and it’s all because I didn’t leave Grey’s Anatomy."

Katherine, maybe you should send Shonda an extra-sweet Christmas card this month.
