Katy Perry’s life hasn’t always been a teenage dream.
The singer may seem to live in a fantasy world, but the pop princess admits that the period following her split with ex-hubby Russell Brand was the darkest time in her life.
"I was in bed for about two weeks," Katy tells the UK’s Sunday Times. "I was pretty f—ked, yes. It hurt a lot — I got a good knock."
In the interview, Katy reveals that she wanted the follow-up to her hit 2010 album Teenage Dream to reflect the pain she was going through after Russell announced his intention to divorce her after just 14 months of marriage.
"What I wanted to call this record at first was Adult Reality, because Teenage Dream was me so high on that cotton-candy cloud, and then it's like I got punched in the face and kicked down the stairs a couple of times," she says. "I had to face the reality that things are not always on cloud nine. "
While Katy’s recent work, like girl power anthem “Roar,” may paint the picture of a woman with abundant self-esteem, she admits that she’s often projected false confidence to mask her vulnerabilities.
“Unfortunately, although I had a lot of outward self-identity, I didn't have the inner kind … My self-worth was in someone else's hands, which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered."
