Katy Perry: I Considered Suicide After Russell Brand Divorce
The world is currently hearing Katy Perry roar, but not too long ago, the pop star was grappling with some very dark thoughts.
Katy, 28, tells Billboard Magazine that her divorce from Russell Brand was so difficult for her that she was still in a lot of pain when she started working on her new album, Prism, at the end of last year.
"I was still in a dark place," Katy says now of how she was feeling back in November 2012 when she started to work on the album. "I hadn't let the light in."
Listeners will really get a window into how low she was feeling through the song "By the Grace of God," which deals with suicidal thoughts.
"That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point," she admits. "I asked myself, 'Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?'" Thankfully, the answer appears to have been "yes."
"All the songs are real-life moments," KP adds. "I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans, if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs."
But Katy now appears to be in a much better place, and she is apparently back to dating on-again, off-again boyfriend John Mayer.
"I can't believe I'm wearing my boyfriend's shirt!" she says with a laugh at one point during the interview, realizing she's wearing a shirt with John on it. "He literally is a genius, as is evident from his songwriting."
We're so proud of Katy for bouncing back, and we can't wait for Prism to come out! She really does have the eye of the tiger.
