Katy Perry has made no secret of her childhood raised as the daughter of two preachers, but stealing a Christian hip-hop artist’s song? That seems like a sin too far for scandalous Katy Kat.
A new lawsuit claims that not only did Katy blatantly rip off a gospel song called “Joyful Noise” for her hit “Dark Horse” she, as TMZ puts it, “destroyed” the reputation of the others artists involved. “They’re now associated with anti-Christian witchcraft and imagery” because of the “Dark Horse” music video, which, to be fair, is a little bit out there with the ancient Egyptian vibe.
The artist at the head of the lawsuit, known as Flame, released “Joyful Noise” with fellow singers Lecrae and John Reilly five years before “Dark Horse” hit the airwaves. Now they’re suing for damages and want Katy to stop using any of their music ASAP. Listen to their song below and tell us if you think it sounds anything like Katy’s single.
To our ears, the openings do have a similar beat but that’s about where the similarities end. Maybe it’s just the difference in lyrics that has us scratching our heads, but we’d surprised if there’s much to stand on in this case. Then again, Flame might be a dark horse.
