The queen of reality music competitions, Kelly Clarkson was crowned the first American Idol in 2002. The pop powerhouse wowed judges Paula, Randy, and Simon, as well as the rest of the country, beating out curly-haired cutie Justin Guarini.
Kelly’s first album, Thankful, was released that October with singles “A Moment Like This,” “Miss Independent,” and “The Trouble With Love Is,” which was featured on the soundtrack for the popular British Christmas film Love Actually.
The album peaked in the Top 10 charts in both America and Canada, and in 2004, Kelly received a Grammy nomination for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.”
The former Idol star produced her second album, Breakaway, in 2004 in which she attempted to distance herself from her pop image. From this album came the singles “Breakaway,” which was featured on the soundtrack for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and “Since U Been Gone.”
Kelly received the Grammy for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance” and “Best Pop Vocal Album” for her work on Breakaway.
My December, her third album, was released in 2007 with the single “Never Again.”
Despite trying to make her own image, Kelly has returned to Idol to perform several times. Notorious former Idol judge Simon Cowell has been quoted saying, “Why you let [Kelly] come back on the show, it makes everybody else look like an amateur.”
Her fourth album, All I Ever Wanted, received a Grammy nomination and featured hit singles “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which the Glee cast performed a cover of, and “I Do Not Hook Up.”
In 2010 Clarkson recorded the song “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with country star Jason Aldean, which made it to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
The next year she released her fifth album, Stronger, which featured singles “Mr. Know It All” and “What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)."
When she starts as a mentor on The Voice, Kelly will be the only reality singing competition contestant to have appeared on American Idol, The X Factor, and The Voice.
