Dance Moms’ Kelly Hyland Explains Attack on Abby Lee Miller: I Was “Provoked” (VIDEO)

Up until now, we’d only heard Abby Lee Miller’s account of the alleged assault that occurred between the Dance Moms star and dance mom Kelly Hyland back in November. But now, Kelly — who is facing charges of assault and harassment — is finally speaking out, and apparently there’s more to the story than the dance director has led on.

The stage mom of dancers Paige and Brooke, Kelly has been a mainstay on the show since it premiered on Lifetime in 2011. We’ve seen her (and the rest of the “dance moms”) face-off with Abby Lee countless times before, but for her to take things from verbal to physical, Kelly says she’d would have to have been given a good reason.

“I’m just not that type of person that would fight with somebody unless I was provoked,” Kelly told Good Morning America’s Linzie Janis this morning, January 30, in her first interview since the incident. Was she disappointed for allowing herself to be provoked, Linzie asks. “Yes, I don’t think anybody wants to be provoked, but I was standing up for my kids.”

This story doesn’t fully jibe with the story that Abby has been telling recently, including in an appearance on The View on Monday. She has said that Kelly blew things out of proportion and was the first person to take things to the physical level, pulling her hair in front of the young dancers. Abby has even gone as far as to imply that Kelly is a danger to her young daughters, due to a drinking issue.

Kelly has pleaded not guilty to the assault and harassment charges that Abby Lee is bringing against her, though she did tell GMA that her lawyer advised her to not further discuss the details of the case, which is still ongoing. And outside of the court, it doesn’t seem that these two will be repairing their relationship any time soon.

“Anyway that she can patch things up with Abby and the show could go on, as it were?” Linzie asked her.

“I don’t think so,” Kelly admits. “I don’t think you can take back all the hurtful things and the pain that she’s put my kids through.”

When asked to respond, Abby Lee told GMA: “I just hope the legal system does the right thing.”
