Kerry Washington has been nominated for just about every award possible in the last year, the latest of which is the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award nom for her role as Olivia Pope in Scandal. Now in her third season playing the Washington, D.C. fixer, Kerry has been a key ingredient in making the show the wonder it is. And while we love all the nominees, we think Kerry has the edge, and here’s why.
1) Scandal is Winning TV
Kerry isn’t the sole actor responsible for making the show shine, but she is a big reason fans tune in. The Season 3 premiere scored the show its highest ratings ever, with over 10 million viewers. Nearly that many viewers stuck around for the midseason finale, which pulled in over nine million viewers on December 12, 2013. In short: People love watching Kerry kick ass and take names.
2) She Makes Everyone Around Her Better
Kerry has the benefit of working with a talented cast backing her up in Olivia Pope and Associates, and elsewhere in D.C. But our favorite scenes, the ones with the best acting, always involve those folks interacting with Queen Washington. Coincidence? We think not.
3) She Keeps It on the Court
Do you know what Kerry was doing last week? Heard any neighbors complain about her? No, probably not, and that’s because she’s among the most professional and self-possessed actresses in the game. Olivia Pope should be jealous of the way she keeps her work the topic of every conversation about her.
4) She’s an Inspiration
We remember Kerry from back when she was playing Chenille in Save the Last Dance (“Slammin. Slammin outfit.”) back in 2001. But she’s gone from playing the sidekick to ruling the roost as queen of the small screen.
5) She’ll Look Great Accepting the Award
OK, so this might be a touch shallow, and we mean no offense to the Dowager Countess, Walter’s widow, the powerful witch, or the super spy in the category. But Kerry’s fashion is unmatched, her current pregnant glow only makes her look glowier, and we just love to see her make maternity couture a thing. Trust.
