Kesha Opens Up About Her Rehab Stay: “It Saved My Life” (VIDEO)
Kesha’s proven herself to be a real Warrior over the past few months. Girlfriend realized she was veering off course after the production of her last record and rather than wait around and let the bad catch up with her, the 27-year-old took the problem by the horns and checked herself into rehab.
Fast-forward to now and Kesha looks better than ever! Gracing the cover of Teen Vogue’s August issue, she’s fresh-faced and beautiful in black pants, navy shirt, and black bow. “Let’s just get the elephant out of the room,” she says to kick off the interview. “My eating disorder is something I’ve been struggling with for a while. People will make up stories, but I went to rehab for an eating disorder — nothing more and nothing less.”
That straight-to-the-point attitude defines the Teen Vogue interview, with Kesha bluntly explaining how making her last record, Warrior, was “a pretty miserable process” that “wore my spirit down.”
“I was fighting like hell to keep my whole irreverent essence and everything raw and visceral that I stand for in it, but in the end I was promoting something that wasn’t the animal I wanted it to be,” she says. “I decided to face my problem head-on.”
The road was a rocky one but Kesha says she’s the better for it. “To have a breakthrough you have to have a breakdown, and I definitely went through both of those — in hindsight, it saved my life.”
A stronger sense of self isn’t the only thing she got out of rehab either. Kesha wrote 14 new songs during her two-month stint (using a toy Casio keyboard nonetheless) and we can’t wait to hear all of them. Tik-tok, girl. Tik-tok.
