Could you imagine anyone other than Kevin McKidd as Grey's Anatomy's trauma surgeon extraordinaire, Owen Hunt? (What's that you say? You could see Joshua Jackson in the part? OK, you've got us there.)
As Kevin McKidd told Queen Latifah on a recent sit-down with the actress-turned-talk show host, he initially refused to meet Shonda Rhimes about taking the part!
OK, we're playing up the drama a little bit. The actual backstory is much less climactic… and even quite endearing.
But it's true that he did say no to Shonda back in 2008!
Here's what he had to say: "I'd been on a movie in eastern Europe at the time, and I'd been away for about three months."
Editor's note: Our best guess is that that would be the 2010 Josh Hartnett thriller Bunraku, which filmed in Romania between April and August 2008 and featured one Kevin McKidd.
"And it was my [son's] eighth birthday," Kevin continued. "I'd landed back on that day to surprise him. It was going to be a big surprise … We'd planned this for weeks."
"And I got a call from my agent, saying, 'Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey's Anatomy, wants to meet you, but she has to see you on this day.'" Kevin went on. "And I was like, 'I can't. I can't 'cause it's my son's birthday.' And my agent was like, 'Well, you know, they might pass on you. And I said, 'Well, I gotta take the risk.'
But that paternal instinct must have hit a chord with the veteran showrunner. Luckily, I think Shonda kinda liked it," Kevin explains.
"Yeah, I heard she said, 'What a nice guy.'" Queen quipped as Kevin laughed. "Thank you, Shonda Rhimes! Thank you for not passing on him."
