Kanye West may be a master at angering fans with his outlandish antics, but it turns out he’s equally masterful at turning on the charm when the situation calls for it.
The rapper, 36, managed to keep his over-the-top birthday proposal to Kim Kardashian under wraps, despite the massive amount of secrecy and coordination that must have gone into popping the question at San Francisco’s AT&T Stadium. In fact, part of Kanye’s master plan to keep Kim from getting wind of his proposal idea included a deception so grand that he included some of Hollywood’s biggest stars without them even knowing. Classic Kanye.
The Wrap reports that just two hours prior to presenting his bride-to-be with an impressive 15-karat Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring, he was casually presenting an award to 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen at the Hollywood Film Awards.
Throwing anyone who might blow his big secret off his trail, Kanye took to the stage to rave about the director.
After giving the audience, including A-listers like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, and Jake Gyllenhaal a bit of a fright by refusing to read the speech prepared for him from the teleprompter, Kanye gave a heartfelt statement including the touching line “Steve McQueen completely breaks the noise and breaks the madness and is respected across the board. And that’s the reason why I flew in from San Francisco to deliver this award, and I’m flying back tonight.”
True to his word, just hours later Kanye was back in San Francisco where he popped the question to Kim as an orchestra played Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful.”
We’ve got to hand it to the guy: He may be a loose cannon, but when it comes to showmanship, he always brings his A-game.
