UPDATE (4:30 p.m. ET): E! Online reports that Kim has been formally charged with public intoxication, trespassing, resisting an officer, and battery on a police officer. She has been released from police custody and is due to appear at the LAX Superior Court on May 10.

Original Story (2:25 p.m. ET): It is with a very heavy heart that we report that Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kim Richards has been arrested. According to E! Online, the 50-year-old reality star was arrested early Thursday morning, April 16, when police responded to a disturbance at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Local authorities indicate that hotel security placed a call around 1:30 a.m. PT because of an apparent fight. Kim was reportedly “belligerent with slurred speech and wreaking of a strong odor of alcohol.” Apparently, she was in the bathroom and refused to come out, though she was eventually taken to the Beverly Hills Police Station for booking. At the station, Kim reportedly kicked an officer.

This is devastating, we’re sure, for Kim’s entire family, but especially for Kyle Richards, who has been put through the ringer by her sister on Season 5 of RHOBH. There was a huge divide between the two siblings all season long and things didn’t get much better during the reunion. Kim has struggled with substance abuse in the past and checked into rehab in 2011.

There was an incident this season at newcomer Eileen Davidson’s poker party in which Kim behaved erratically and later admitted to taking medication that wasn’t hers to treat pain. Kim’s co-star Lisa Rinna continuously worried about Kim’s well-being and took a lot of flak for continually bringing up the subject of Kim’s sobriety. While Kim has maintained that she’s been sober for three years, it’s clear now that things may be more serious than we’d suspected.
