If any celebrity has been put through the romantic wringer, it’s Kristen Stewart. Not only was every up and down of her high profile relationship with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson documented (and criticized) in the media, but when she made a big mistake by cheating with married Snow White and The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, the world got to watch that unfold, too.

So what has Kristen learned through her experiences in love? The person she’s with can’t be what she wants them to be — some things are just out of her hands.

“Some people have certain things, like, ‘That’s what I’m going for,’ and I have a version of that,” Kristen confessed to Marie Claire when she covered the March 2014 issue. “If you fall in love with someone, you want to own them. You want them to be what you love.”

And while that was once Kristen’s way of thinking, she’s seen the light and discovered that’s not at all what she should look for in a relationship. “Why would you want that?” she added.

Now, she’s making peace with the fact that love isn’t something you can plan — it just happens.

“You don’t know who you fall in love with,” she said. “You just don’t. You don’t control it.”

Very true, and a lesson we’re glad Kristen’s managed to learn, since it’s a tough one. Meanwhile, the artist formerly known as Bella Swan is letting go and giving in to how unpredictable life can be.

“I mean, at this point, I can’t even tell you if I want to hang out on Saturday,” she joked.
