Does Lady Edith Have an Affair With Her Editor, Michael Gregson?

Lady Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) doesn’t exactly have the best luck when it comes to love. In Season 1, she is hopelessly in love with the man engaged to her older, more beautiful sister Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) only to have him (supposedly) sink to the bottom of the Atlantic with the Titanic. Her attempts to then woo Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) fall similarly flat once Mary enters the picture.

Then, in Season 2, that first beau claims to return, but is so horribly disfigured the rest of the family didn’t believe his claim as heir, and casts him out despite Edith’s protests. Meanwhile, she continues her pursuit of a local, married farmhand and trying to catch the eye of the her much older neighbor, Sir Anthony Strallan (Robert Bathurst). Eventually he purposes, only to leave Edith jilted on the alter.

By the end of Season 3, however, Edith has a new man in her life: her editor at The Sketch, Michael Gregson (Charles Edwards). Unfortunately, he fits her type exactly: Completely unavailable. As Michael reveals at the end of the series, he’s not only married, but his wife is in a mental asylum and so in accordance with the law of the day, he can never divorce her. Does this discourage Edith?

New photos from the upcoming season, which premiered in the UK on Sunday, September 22, at 9 p.m., show Edith getting cozy with Michael, even being so bold as to kiss him in public. Personally, Laura says she’s happy to see her character come out of her shell a bit. “I’m enjoying letting my sexual side come out a little bit this series,” she tells Daily Mail. “It’s really fun and I feel like it’s a natural progression of this story.”

What do you think? Will things finally work out for Edith or, as her father once bluntly put it to his wife, will she be the Crawley daughter taking care of her parents in their old age? Sound off in the comments below!
