Lady Gaga Defends Miley Cyrus’s VMA Performance: “I Give Her Props”

Even the merpeople are coming to Miley Cyrus’s defense. Lady Gaga, in seashell bra and starfish barrette, recently sat down with keeper of the Bravo castle Andy Cohen on his show, Watch What Happens Live. During their chat, Andy asked Gaga what she made of Miley’s controversial 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance.

“I just think everybody needs to lighten up and leave her alone,“ Gaga says at about the 8-minute, 30-second mark. “Because it’s pop music; everybody’s entitled to their own artistic expression and if you have a problem with it just change the channel.”

“I don’t understand the obsessive need to constantly go on and on about hating things all the time because, what, she’s 20 years old and, if anything, I give her props. She’s growing up in front of the entire world and maybe she’s not so happy with the things she did in her career when she was younger and she wants to be free. So let her do what she wants.”

Gaga’s got a point. Plus, she knows a thing or two about giving risqué performances. Remember that time she faux-bled all over the stage at the 2009 VMAs? Or arrived in a giant egg at the 2011 Grammys? Or wore a thong made of beachy collectibles on the same stage where Miley and Robin Thicke blurred all kinds of lines? Honestly, Miley’s got some catching up to do.
