Lady Gaga Defends Vomit Performance at SXSW (VIDEO)

Lady Gaga’s SWSW performance — you know, the one where she was purposefully vomited on mid-drum solo by a “vomit painter” — wasn’t everyone one (particularly Demi Lovato). But Mother Monster says that’s OK; art isn’t meant to be universally liked.

“I guess we weren’t completely surprised [by the controversy],” she said during a March 21 interview on TODAY. While she and the vomit artist, Millie Brown, knew their unconventional duet wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste, Gaga says they “both really believe in artistic expression and strong identities.”

“I support her and what she does,” the ARTPOP singer continues. “For us that performance was art in its purest form. But we totally understand that some people won’t be into it.”

As for the controversy it brought up, Lady Gaga says “it doesn’t matter.”

“Either way, we don’t make things for any intention in particular other than in the spirit of entertaining the crowd and creating something that is really for the moment.”

As for those naysayers out there who think Gaga’s long hair, big boots, and crazy antics are just an act, she’s got nothing to say but baby, she was born this way.

“We sometimes think there’s a perception that what I’m doing is all a big show,” she explains. “I really truly feel that it’s really just part of who I am. Every moment of my life is devoted to my music and to my fans and it’s really truly me.”

Vomit and all.
