Lady Gaga Does Glamour: “I’m Not Conventionally Beautiful” (VIDEO)

Soon to release her next album, Artpop, Lady Gaga covered Glamour’s Women of the Year Issue. And in a behind-the scenes video from the cover shoot, Lady Gaga reveals to Andy Cohen the reason behind all her crazy costumes.

A tampon, a fetus in the womb, covered in stuffed animals — is there anything we haven’t seen Lady Gaga wear? But there’s a method to her madness, she told Glamour.

“[I’m] not conventionally beautiful,” Lady Gaga said. “I want my fans to feel the way I do, to know what they have to offer is just as important, more important, than what’s happening on the outside.”

And her costumes are the loophole Gaga’s found that gets her out of being judged by the more traditional standards of beauty in Hollywood.

In some ways, the outfits — these creations are because I don’t want to face the reality of what people want from a female pop star,” Gaga admitted. “Everybody always laughs because I feel so much more comfortable with, like, a giant paper bag on my whole body and paint on my face.”

“Sometimes I try really hard to take it all off,” she added. “But inevitably what’s underneath is still not a straight edge. And I don’t think it ever will be.”

And as for calling herself Lady Gaga instead of her given name, Stefani? All part of the costume that shields her from that female pop star reality.

“I became somebody else for a reason, you know,” she said. “This is part of what my message is — you can become whoever you want to be, to escape your past.”
