Lamar Odom Checks Into Rehab: “It Was His Idea” (UPDATE)
UPDATE (12/13/2016 1:10 p.m. ET): We have new details about this Lamar Odom rehab stint.
In case you missed yesterday’s news, the 37-year-old Los Angeles Lakers alum and ex-husband of Khloe Kardashian voluntarily checked himself into a San Diego treatment center.
“Lamar is in good spirits,” a source tells People.
“Lamar checked into rehab a week ago,” another insider tells the magazine.
“He plans to stay for 30 days. It’s a substance abuse program, but he was not abusing drugs when he went in. He is clean. This is a precautionary measure.”
“He wants to stay clear and focused,” People’s insider continues.
“With the divorce from Khloé being finalized and the holidays coming up, he doesn’t want to slip up.
“He’s trying to take care of himself. He really wants to be better.
“His friends and family encouraged him to go in, and he agreed and made the decision.”
Another People source says the rehab stay was actually Lamar’s initiative, however.
“He drove himself, it was his idea,” that person says.
“He’s going to be gone during the holidays, which is when people have relapses and problems.”
“The goal is for him to be inside during Christmas and New Years. Crazy things happen during those times. There [have] been amazing reports from the doctors thus far. He’s doing extraordinary well, he’s in great spirits.”
Life coach John “Doc” Fuller, who helped Lamar’s family stage an intervention in July, agrees the basketball star’s timing couldn’t be better.
“Just think about it,” he says to Page Six. “How many people are going to be drinking and using drugs during Christmas? How many people are going to drink during New Year’s?”
“Any time you can make a major decision around the holiday it just shows maturity, it shows some amount of self control, accountability, and the love and respect that you have for those who are willing to support you,” the life coach adds.
Original story (12/12/2016 7:31 p.m. ET): Lamar Odom’s struggles aren’t over.
E! News reports Lamar has checked himself into a treatment center near San Diego, California.
But if a source is to be believed, the former Los Angeles Lakers star hasn’t relapsed; he just wants help staying sober.
“It was his own decision,” this insider tells E! News.
“He wanted to work on his mental and physical health for the next chapter of his life.
“He has not fallen off the wagon, but he understands the importance of maintaining his sobriety.”
Still, this rehab news likely sets off alarm bells in the minds of Kardashian fans. Lamar nearly died in October 2015 after taking multiple drugs at a brothel in Crystal, Nevada.
Then-wife Khloé and other family members converged on the hospital to which he was taken, and they were told he only had four hours to live, as E! reminds us.
Still, Lamar made an amazing recovery, though no part of it was easy, by all reports.
In July, a source “close with Lamar” told E! reports of him being homeless were false.
“He has a nice place in California,” that source continued. “It's just a lie.”
“He is doing well,” the informant said. “He is determined to stay on the straight and narrow and wants to be the best father he can possibly be and he is doing the work required to achieve that.”
“It is not easy,” the source concluded. “But he is focused and determined.”
