While allegations of heavy drug use may have damaged his reputation stateside, he’s still got plenty of people willing to bank on a career comeback — although they’re an ocean away.
Fox News reports that Lamar has officially signed a short-term contract with Spanish basketball club Baskonia (also known as Laboral Kuxta), based out of Vitoria-Gasteiz, a city in the Basque country in northern Spain.
Although Lamar had reportedly been hoping to rejoin one of his previous stateside teams, particularly favoring a contract with either the Clippers or the Lakers, it seems as though getting back on the court is better than being jobless for the star. It seems like a good start to reinvigorating his stalled career, but there are still hurdles to overcome before Lamar gains back the respect of his former players and coaches.
“Most NBA GMs want to give him this year off and take a look at him next year after a year away,” a source revealed to HollywoodLife.
While Lamar may hope to play for the NBA once again, not everyone is so optimistic about his return to US ball.
Earlier this year, former Lakers coach Phil Jackson said of Lamar’s future with the NBA, “I think that bridge might have been burned.”
Do you think playing in Spain is a good idea for Lamar? Will it help him get back into the NBA’s good graces?
