Lea Michele’s (Rachel) boyfriend may have died of a heroin overdose, but the Glee star wants to make sure everyone knows that Cory Monteith (Finn) was much more than his addiction. Sure, it was something he struggled with. Yes, he ultimately lost that struggle. But Lea feels that Cory’s addiction should in no way define him.
“I only have happy memories of Cory. He was not his addiction — unfortunately, it won,” Lea tells Seventeen Magazine for the April 2014 issue. "But that wasn’t who he was.”
At the time of his death in July 2013, Cory had been fighting his battle with addiction for over ten years. He entered rehab in March 2013 and left in April. After that, his life seemed to be returning to normal, until the shocking news that July, when he overdosed on a mixture of alcohol and heroin in a Vancouver, B.C. hotel room.
But that image isn’t what Lea wants people to remember Cory by. She hopes they’ll think of the kind, caring star, a soft-spoken but incredibly happy guy.
“Cory made me feel like a queen everyday. From the minute he said, ‘I’m your boyfriend,’ I loved every day,” Lea says. Now that is a mental image we hope we never forget.
