We know quite a bit about Lea Michele’s (Rachel) relationships since Glee started, primarily ones with American Idiot star Theo Stockman and of course Cory Monteith (Finn). But who did she date before Glee?
As it turns out, Lea was dating Broadway actor John Lloyd Young, who’s now 38, just before she nabbed her role on Glee. The two met in 2008 when they were both starring in a Hollywood Bowl production of Les Miserables, and they dated from summer 2008 to spring 2009.
So who is John Lloyd Young? Well, you may recognize the name if you’re a Jersey Boys fan. John earned a Tony award for his Broadway debut as lead Frankie Valli in the show, which he played from 2005 until 2007. He will also reprise his role in the Clint Eastwood-directed film adaptation, which is due in theaters next June.
John also had a small role on Glee way back in Season 1, playing Henri St. Pierre, the thumbless woodshop teacher who joins Acafellas but gets addicted to cough syrup. More recently, he appeared in an episode of the now-canceled CBS drama Vegas.
John was asked by Broadway.com in 2010 whether we would see him on Glee again, and his answer seemed to suggest that he and Lea aren’t particularly close these days. “I don’t know,” he said about coming back to Glee. “My ex-girlfriend is the star of the show so we’ll have to see... Maybe after her character graduates high school!”
Indeed, their break-up definitely took Lea by surprise back in the day. “He’s just like, ‘We’re done,’” Lea tells Elle this month of how abruptly he broke the news. Right after that happened, she needed a change of pace, so pal Jonathan Groff (Jesse) convinced her to move to L.A., and shortly thereafter, she landed Glee. Talk about serendipity.
So it sounds like everything happens for a reason. But if John ends up back on Glee for an episode or two to help Schue get Acafellas back together, we'd give that idea a thumbs-up. So to speak.
