The song Lea Michele (Rachel) wrote for her late boyfriend Cory Monteith (Finn) after his unexpected death of a heroin overdose in July has just been released. “If You Say So” — named for the last words Cory ever said to her — is now streaming on iTunes, and it’s just as heartbreaking as we’d imagined.

We’ve known this song was coming for almost four months now, but that doesn't make listening to it any easier. Every lyric is deeply personal. Lea has opened up about the grief and pain she experienced in those early days, right after Cory was ripped away from her. The song begins:

It’s been seven whole days, seven whole days

Since you paralyzed me

Seven whole days, seven whole days

Since you lost your fight

Listening, we experience the actress’ pain right alongside her. The sleepless nights. The heartbreak. Checking her phone, still expecting to hear from Cory. The suffering is incredibly raw.

If there is one bright side to such loss, it’s this: Lea reveals the context in which Cory said the words “if you say so.” It wasn’t because they were fighting, like some may have imagined. No, they weren’t arguing. Instead, in the words of Lea’s song, their final conversation went like this:

You said, ‘I love you, go’

I said ‘I love you more’

Then a breath, a pause, you said:

‘If you say so’

Full Song Lyrics:

It’s been seven whole days, seven whole days

Since you paralyzed me

Seven whole days, seven whole days

Since you lost your fight

And I can’t get the last words that you said

Can’t get those words out of my head

Seven whole days, seven whole days

And four words

And I can’t get away from the burn and the pain

I lie awake

And the fallen hero haunts my thoughts

How could you leave me this way?

It’s been seven whole days

Without your embrace

I want to see your face

I’ve got some things to say

It was just a week ago

You said, ‘I love you, go’

I said ‘I love you more’

Then a breath, a pause, you said:

‘If you say so’

If you say so, if you say so, if you say so

It’s been seven whole days, seven whole days

Since I heard the phone ring

Seven whole days, seven whole days

Since I heard your voice

And I can’t get the last words that you said

Can’t get those words out of my head

It’s been seven whole days, seven whole days

Of pure hell

And I can’t get away from the burn and the pain

I lie awake

And the fallen hero haunts my thoughts

How could you leave me this way?

It’s been seven whole days

Without your embrace

I want to see your face

I’ve got some things to say

It was just a week ago

You said, ‘I love you, go’

I said ‘I love you more’

Then a breath, a pause, you said:

‘If you say so’

If you say so, if you say so, if you say so

I can’t believe it’s true, I keep looking for you

I check my phone and wait to hear from you

In the crowded room

And now I’ll never know if all I’ve been told

Is just a lie

So cold

I thought we would grow old

Mirrors in the smoke

Left me to choke

It’s been seven whole days

Without your embrace

I want to see your face

I’ve got some things to say

It was just a week ago

You said, ‘I love you, go’

I said ‘I love you more’

Then a breath, a pause, you said:

‘If you say so’

If you say so, if you say so, if you say so
