In the fictional Glee universe, Rachel (Lea Michele) is currently starring in a Broadway revival of Funny Girl and is the talk of the Big Apple because of her expert portrayal of Fanny Brice, but does this mean that life will imitate art and Lea will appear in a real Funny Girl revival?

A few years ago Six Feet Under actress Lauren Ambrose beat out Lea for the role of Fanny in proposed revival that was planned for Los Angeles, but that production fell through when several investors withdrew from the project. Now Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy owns the rights to the iconic show, and he is, of course, considering Lea to play the lead role made famous by her idol Barbra Streisand.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan opened up about his big B’way plans and whether or not Lea will be playing Fanny in real life. “I have the rights to it,” he said. “It’s something that we’re talking about. I’ve never done Broadway. I’ve always wanted to. Right now, we’re just sort of testing the waters with different people.”

Uh, “different people”?! That’s blasphemy, Mr. Murphy!

Ryan may be weighing his options now, but he made it pretty clear that Lea remains his No. 1 choice for Fanny. “[Lea] and I have made no mistake of our mutual love for that property, so if it could come together at a time that she’d be willing to make that commitment to go back to Broadway — which I don’t know that she is right now — it would have to be the right director and the right leading man.”

Lea may have taken a bit of a hiatus from Broadway to, ya know, appear on Glee and all, but if anything could get her back to The Great White Way it would be a Funny Girl revival helmed by Ryan Murphy.
