The Glee cast was close from the get-go, but now that five years have come and gone, the show’s star Lea Michele (Rachel) says the cast is now tighter than ever, even if they don’t spend quite as much time together as they once did.

In Brunette Ambition, Lea writes, “The cast of Glee is amazing, and I can’t say enough good things about them. While we don’t hang out as much in our downtime now as we did on day one, when we were inseparable, our connection now is deeper. They are my family.”

That deeper connection Lea mentioned is no doubt a result of all the time the cast spent together, but it also probably has to do with the fact that they’ve experienced highs and lows as a group, as well. Remember, back in Glee’s early days the cast met President Obama, went on Oprah, and had countless other pinch-worthy experiences which likely prepared them for some heartbreaking lows, like losing Cory Monteith (Finn) to a heroin overdose in July 2013.

Lea continues, calling out some specific cast members, “Amber will text me out of the blue just to tell me that she loves me — so will Kevin McHale. And Chris Colfer is one of the loves of my life — I see us in forty years in some Broadway revival, sipping martinis and reminiscing about the good old days. I’ve known Jenna since I was a kid (when we got to work together on Spring Awakening).” Um, can we just say right now that we plan on seeing that Broadway revival in forty years?!

And of course, no discussion about how much the Glee cast meant to Lea would be complete without mentioning Cory, who Lea was dating at the time of death nearly a year ago. She concludes, “And then there’s Cory, who played such a large role in the show and also in my personal life."

Are you surprised that Lea says the Glee cast has a deeper connection now? Sound off below!

Glee Season 6 is expected to debut in 2015.
