Still wondering whether or not Lea Michele (Rachel) has what it takes to appear on Sons of Anarchy? The Glee gal already shot her one-episode guest stint earlier this summer, but that hasn’t stopped some from questioning SOA creator Kurt Sutter’s choice to enlist her on the gritty FX drama.

Kurt recently spoke to about SOA’s final season — which kicks off September 9 — and he opened up about how Lea managed to snag her guest starring gig. “With Lea Michele, we heard she was interested from our executive producer and director Paris Barclay, who knew her from Glee and working together with Ryan Murphy [creator of Glee and FX’s American Horror Story]. And so it all sort of worked out,” he recalled.

Noting that SOA — a show about a motorcycle club in the fictional town of Charming that engages in myriad illegal activities — is radically different from the lighthearted musicality of Glee, Kurt continued, “We cast her outside the box. She plays a truck stop waitress. You know, tough, tank top, not a smidge of makeup on her. She completely embraced what the show was all about. It’s a show that people want to play different parts on.”

And although Kurt didn’t comment specifically on the quality of Lea’s performance this time, he valiantly defended the 27-year-old actress from a hater on Twitter just last month. “Look beyond the song and dance. The kid has chops,” he told said naysayer.

Lea’s SOA episode isn’t slated to air until October 14 at 9 p.m. ET on FX, but having seen her on set we can vouch for the fact that she certainly looks the part!
