Who knew the always elegant Lea Michele (Rachel) could pull off frumpy so easily?! While we had no idea Lea was capable of getting down and dirty, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter clearly saw something special in the Glee actress when he cast her for a small guest-starring role in the FX drama’s upcoming seventh and final season.

Lea lays Gertie, who is described as a “simple truck-stop waitress.” She shot her SOA episode earlier this summer and was spotted smoking with the show’s matriarch, Gemma (played by Katey Sagal) while wearing a waitress’ uniform. As some of you diehard Gleeks may remember, Katey, who is married to Kurt,  played Artie’s (Kevin McHale) mom, Nancy, back in Season 4 of the FOX dramedy.

Kurt has already defended casting Lea, but now he’s taking his admiration for the Glee star one step further, telling TVLine, “I’m just now doing post-[production] on that episode, and she’s great. She completely went there. Not a stitch of makeup. She’s just a frumpy waitress. She really got it and embraced what the show was. I’m thrilled.”

Kurt also discussed how Lea’s guest spot came about, saying SOA executive producer/director Paris Barclay (who has helmed a few Glee episodes himself) really lobbied for Lea. “He’s really close to all those actors, and really helped them through their time of need,” Kurt explains. “And I knew she was a big fan of the show, and we had this role that opened up. It was sort of a one-off and I knew we’d be able to get her in and out in a day. And the timing worked for her. She was thrilled.”

Not only were Kurt and Lea both excited things worked out, but Paris recently said everyone on the SOA set was so happy to have Lea on board that they’re looking into expanding her role. No word on whether or not that will happen given that Glee is now also in production, but we’ve got our fingers crossed!

Lea’s episode of Sons of Anarchy is scheduled to air on October 14 at 9 p.m. ET on FX. Will you be watching?
