Lee Daniels Wanted to Commit Suicide, Purposely Tried to Get AIDS
Empire creator Lee Daniels has always been open about his sexuality, admitting that much of character Jamal Lyon’s struggles with being a black gay man reflect many of his own past experiences.
The TV executive recently opened up even more on his troubled youth, admitting at one point in his life he purposefully tried to contract HIV in an effort to end his own life.
During a candid lecture at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and TV, Lee revealed that he lost many of his friends during the 1980’s AIDS crisis that swept much of the nation.
“It [AIDS] wiped away all of my friends. I had no friends… it was terrifying, because we never knew whether you could drink from glasses or what it was. It was the most terrifying thing ever.”
He went on to say he felt “better men” than him were dying, and that he purposefully tried to contract the virus by engaging in unprotected sex with strangers while on drugs, according to All Hip Hop.
“I didn’t understand why it was that I wasn’t [dead], because there were far better souls than me that we're [dying]. I thought that I needed to go. And so I descended into drugs and into sexual bathhouses to die.”
He went on, “That I don’t have AIDS is a miracle from God. I really don’t understand it, because I should have had HIV. Everybody else did.”
