Legendary Actor Dick Van Patten Dead at Age 86
We’ve got some sad Hollywood news to report today. Dick Van Patten, a legendary actor who has appeared in everything under the sun but is most well known for starring in Eight Is Enough, has passed away today, June 23, due to complications from diabetes. He was 86 years old.
While some younger TV fans might not recognize Dick, perhaps his family connections will ring a bell. Dick was father-in-law to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Emmy-winning soap opera star Eileen Davidson. That’s right, Vincent Van Patten is one of Dick’s three sons with the others being Nels and James.
Dick’s career is quite fascinating and impressive, having started out on Broadway at the tender age of seven, entering the TV world in 1949, and acting all the way up to his final role on Hot in Cleveland in 2011. If you’re counting, that means Dick was in the business for around 75 years which, if you ask us, is pretty incredible.
Some of Dick’s career highlights, excluding the previously-mentioned Eight Is Enough, are Mama, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, Happy Days, The Love Boat, The Facts of Life, 7th Heaven, Arrested Development, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Freaky Friday, and Spaceballs just to name a few.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dick’s entire family during this difficult time — especially Pat, his wife of more than 60 years.
