Lionel Richie Empathizes With Billy Ray Cyrus: ‘Honestly, There Is No Control’

In addition to slamming Miley Cyrus’s choice of clothing (or lack thereof) in her recent “Wrecking Ball” music video, people have been pestering Miley’s dad, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, pleading for him to take the reins and reel in his daughter.

But instead of publicly scolding her, expressing his humiliation and disappointment, or even just laying low from social media, Billy Ray has spoken loudly and proudly about his daughter’s dance moves, birthday suit, and her “God given talent” of song.

While this undoubtedly confuses millions of music fans around the world, one fellow musician who knows exactly what Billy Ray is going through is Lionel Richie. Father to successful clothing designer Nicole Richie, Lionel experienced similar struggles back when his famous daughter was going through a difficult phase of drug addiction.

"Dad to Dad, I've been Billy Ray," Lionel Richie tells omg! Insider. “When you have a teenage daughter growing up in Hollywood, in the business, I mean, what I went through with Nicole, God bless Billy Ray," Richie adds. "Honestly, there is no control."

Nicole, now 31, has since conquered her demons, married Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, and has two beautiful children: Harlow and Sparrow. We couldn’t even begin to think of Miley as a mother just yet. Give her until she’s in her 30’s maybe? Yeah, another solid 10+ years should do it.

We do retain some hope for Miley, even if there seems to be no hope left for the “We can’t Stop” singer, especially since her relationship with (former?) fiancé Liam Hemsworth has lost all momentum. The latest news on him is that he may have been sexting January Jones behind Miley’s back. We’re pretty sure that means they’re over.

Lionel urges Billy Ray to just stay strong and ride out the wave — basically what he’s been trying to do all along. He says, “It's one of those things where you have to say, 'Please God let it be over soon.’”

True. That.
