Has American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez learned nothing from Beyoncé Lip-sync-Gate during the presidential inauguration of 2013? People do not appreciate lip syncing during live performances, especially when the show is based on singing (hello, Idol!).
Mariah Carey — who was already wildly unpopular during her time as a judge on the show last year — received much criticism for lip-syncing her medley of hits during the Season 12 finale. (Technically, her rep says that she did sing live ... to a pre-recorded track.)
Did the same thing happen last night during the March 20 elimination episode? That’s what many a J.Lo and non-J.Lo fan alike are claiming. She started out singing a cappella on a faux Bronx staircase at the beginning of the performance alongside former Idol contestants Pia Toscano, Allison Iraheta, and Jessica Sanchez, but, The Daily Mail claims, J.Lo later resorted to lip-syncing her new hit “I Luh Ya Papi” once she began dancing. Many fans took to online forums to say that it was painfully obvious, as her lips did not match the lyrics.
The Daily Mail posted some of the many Twitter rants, with one fan complaining, “This is a singing show right?”
Dancing With the Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy actually praised J.Lo on Twitter, calling the song a “hit.” But one fan retorted, “@MaksimC @JLo what happened to music? People getting ecstatic over a lip-sync performance, not even written by the artist… Terrible.”
While there’s been no comment from J.Lo on the controversy, she did give a romantic nod to her oh-so-young beau, Casper Smart.
“I think everyone knows who my Papi is,” the age-defying singer told Idol host Ryan Seacrest. Well, at least that part was for sure live!
What did you think? Did Jennifer lip-sync? If so, is that so wrong? Weigh in below!
