The Walking Dead on List of Top 5 Binge-Watched TV Shows
The Walking Dead is a great show to binge-watch, although after a few hours you may develop an affected Southern accent and drop “stuff” and “thangs” into every other sentence. You can actually binge on the show in the upcoming Fourth of July full series marathon (that’s a “super binge”), but that’s not the kind of thing TiVo studied when coming up with a list of most binge-watched shows.
Variety quoted the results of TiVo’s study, which defined binge-watching as viewing (at least) three episodes of the same program in a row. TiVo said 91 percent of surveyed viewers said they’d binge-watched before, and 40 percent said they binged within the past week. What are the most binge-watched shows? Dramas. Serial storytelling. That makes sense, since you get hooked on the story and want to know what happens next, as opposed to standalone eps of comedies like The Big Bang Theory.
The survey was made from 30,000 TiVo subscribers, so isn’t really that reflective of the entire U.S. viewership. Still, it makes sense for Breaking Bad to top a 2014 binge list, since the show just ended its run and it regularly makes best series lists. It's impressive for TWD to make the cut at all, but it may rank even higher in other binge surveys.
Have you ever binge-watched The Walking Dead? If so, was it from saved episodes on your DVR, watching seasons on DVD/Blu-ray, through the marathons? All of the above? Other? What’s your favorite way — do you like the group marathon experience or watching on disc, without all the commercials?
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
