Watch: Rachel Sings “Yesterday” About Finn in Glee’s Season 5 Premiere (VIDEO)
Rachel (Lea Michele) is back for Glee Season 5, and she's still hard at work pursuing her dream of Broadway stardom. But when things take a turn for the worse, Rachel is confronted by thoughts of her ex-fiancé, Finn (Cory Monteith), and remembering the good times they had. Rachel sang the Beatles' emotional classic "Yesterday," during Glee'sSeason 5 premiere: “Love, Love, Love,” and though Rachel didn't mention Finn specifically, it's clear that he was on her mind .
Based on the song lyrics, the New York City ingenue seems to be longing for the love of her high school years and wishing that he could be by her side.
“Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play. Now I need a place to hide away. Oh, I believe in yesterday. Why he had to go, I don’t know,” she sings.
Sadly, we know that Finn and Rachel's love story simply cannot have happy ending. Though Glee creator Ryan Murphy has implied that he fully intended to get Finn and Rachel back together eventually, the sudden and unexpected death of actor Cory Monteith this summer tragically put a stop on those plans.
With Cory gone, the character of Finn Hudson will be written off during Glee Season 5, Episode 3, just two weeks after this song airs. It’s a heartbreaking turn in the love story of one of Glee’s most beloved couples. Even though we know it’s coming, the thought of watching it all play out on screen still feels like a lot to bear.
