Lorde Turns 17 Years Old — 17 Fun Facts About the “Pure Heroine”

Thanks to her debut hit single "Royals," Lorde's first album, Pure Heroine, has been dominating the music charts. But you may be surprised to learn how freakishly young the hyper-talented singer is — she turns 17 today, November 7!

In honor of her birthday, here are 17 Lorde factoids you may not have known.

  1. Her real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor.

  2. She's a Kiwi, having been born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand.

  3. She's of Croatian and Irish ancestry.

  4. Universal Music signed her when she was only 13.

  5. Her mom, Sonja Yelich, is an award-winning poet.

  6. Perhaps that's why she wrote the "Royals" lyrics in just half an hour.

  7. Not surprisingly she was once obsessed with royalty, telling Vice, "I’ve always been into that stuff since I was a little kid. I used to write out all their family trees and everything!"

  8. Now, however, she is fixated on Hollywood trainwrecks. "I'm obsessed with really high profile celebrities who get really f—ked up; I think you know who I’m talking about!" she reveals to Vice. "I find it all so interesting — such tragedies that stem from being put on a pedestal."

  9. She became the first solo woman in 17 years to top Billboard's alternative chart.

  10. Miley Cyrus fans sent her hateful messages after "Royals" dethroned Miley's Wrecking Ball" in the top slot on iTunes — one saying, "Kill yourself, you crusty old hag."

  11. Seeing all the vitriol, Miley herself tweeted to Lorde, writing, "Why [are] people so mean? P.S. Your music is awesome."

  12. Lorde dissed Selena Gomez (calling "Come & Get It" anti-feminist) and Taylor Swift (calling her "too flawless"), and Joe Jonas tweeted at her to defend both artists.

  13. She also turned down Katy Perry's offer to tour as Katy's opening act. "I have a pretty good gut instinct for stuff and if it feels right I'll do it," she explained in a New Zealand TV interview.

  14. Friends at school call her "Dusty" or "Casper." Why? "Because I’m real white," as she revealed to radio host Smallzy on NovaFM.

  15. As her Twitter profile pic proves, she has a wrist tattoo depicting a rose.

  16. She idolizes Nicki Minaj, tweeting that she is an "important female in pop."

  17. She traveled by airplane for the first time in August, as The Week reports.

Happy 17th, Ms. Lorde!
