Lucy Hale is opening up in her newly released country album, Road Between. The Pretty Little Liars actress talked to Yahoo Music about how, though you might not know Lucy Hale from Pretty Little Liars, you’ll learn a lot about who she is — flaws and all — by listening to her album.

And that’s one of the reasons she loves country music so much: it’s OK to talk about your pain.

“What I like about country music is it makes it OK to talk about your pain and not being OK all the time,” Lucy said. “That’s what I think a lot of people are going to be shocked when they hear my album. What sets me apart is you’ll get to know who I am. People don’t know who Lucy is. People know who Aria Montgomery is or about Pretty Little Liars, and so this is kind of like I’m an open book. I really don’t hold back. I’m flawed. I have problems. I have issues, and we kind of talk about it. I think that’s cool to tell the people who support me that it’s OK to talk about these things. That’s why I love country music.”

And that’s why we love you, Lucy. The Memphis native is really putting herself out there with this album, reaching for a dream she’s had since she was young rather than resting on her PLL laurels. And we think it’s especially fitting that, given Lucy’s efforts to really open up with this album, one of the tracks most revered by critics — the humbly-titled “Just Another Song” — was the one she co-wrote herself. Billboard had this to say about it: “It starts off as a simple-sounding folk tune about how life is great when the dishes are done, but opens up into one of the more personal moments of the record, with gorgeous orchestration in the background as Hale wrestles through getting over someone.” Sounds like people are really responding to Lucy’s very personal debut album.

Road Between is available in stores, iTunes music, and at other online retailers. What do you think of Lucy’s album? Sound off in the comments below!
