Unlike some of the other parents who draw incredible works of art on their kids sandwich bags or scribble little cartoons on their child’s brown lunch bag just before they step onto the bus (thanks, dad!), Brooklyn mom Nina Levy is actually an established artist who extends her talent to her kids’ lunch napkins.

“Like many other parents, I just wanted to include a note in his lunch box for his first day of having lunch without me at school so I drew a picture on a napkin in black Sharpie and I guess it was a hit,” Nina told Today.

Nina originally began her art with her first son, who is now 10 years old and no longer takes his lunch to school. Her younger son, who is 6, loves her art and continues to look forward to his newest colorful surprise each day. Even though her eldest no longer receives the art installations, he still contributes to the ideas.

Nina takes her time at night between the hours of 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. to sketch out the next day’s masterpiece, which can take up to two hours to complete. The napkins do have a very masculine theme usually depicting comic book or video game characters or dinosaurs. While boys will be boys and ask for bloody battles involving guns and swords, Nina says she tries to keep the scenes school appropriate.

“They go to a Quaker school so (the teachers) don’t like to see characters being eviscerated or shot with guns on the napkins, so we try to present a slightly more wholesome message,” Nina says. “There are a lot of napkins with weapons with fruit — like a strawberry stuck on a sword or something to try and make them a little less violent.”

All requests aren’t battle-related, Nina notes, and we can guess the cat dressed as a pirate with six-pack abs would be the best example. Nina explains that her son wasn’t too happy with that one because it looked too much like a romance novel cover. It would make for an interesting novel, though!

Take a look below at a small assortment of Nina's napkin creations:
