Maci Bookout has advocated for teen pregnancy prevention for a while, but now the Teen Mom star is making sure folks are aware of another health issue that affected her personally this year. In a recent appearance on The Doctors, Maci told the show’s panel about a recent scare that put her in the hospital with a condition that she says caused more pain than giving birth to Bentley.

The pain was so intense, “I didn’t even want to get up to go to the doctor,” Maci revealed. It’s a good thing she did, though. After an initial course of antibiotics failed to work and her symptoms got worse, Maci had a CT scan, leading doctors to diagnose her with a severe kidney infection.

Typically caused by an untreated urinary tract infection, kidney infections are serious business, as Maci can now attest. According to the Mayo Clinic, if left untreated, a severe kidney infection can cause life-threatening complications, including permanent kidney damage and blood poisoning (septicemia).

Thankfully, Maci got to the hospital before things went too far and her doctors were able to clear up the infection with an aggressive course of IV antibiotics. When asked if the infection was more painful than childbirth, Maci says, “Oh my god, I’d rather have eight kids at once than do that {again]!” Yikes! Enough said, Mace.
