Macklemore Partners With MTV to Tackle Prescription Drug Abuse on College Campuses

Macklemore found overnight success with his wildly popular hit “Thrift Shop.” Now, the Seattle rapper is using his newfound fame to help spread awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse on college campuses.

Macklemore is partnering with mtvU and The Jed Foundation to launch an initiative aimed at helping college students navigate the issue of prescription drug abuse on college campuses. As part of the campaign, mtvU debuted a series of short videos featuring college student from across the country sharing their struggles with prescription drug abuse. These videos will show “The Other Side” of prescription drug use. And later this month, mtvU will air an exclusive interview with Macklemore, where he will open up about his past struggles with substance abuse.

The Grammy-nominated rapper has been sober since August 2008, when he went to rehab for a drug and alcohol problem. In fact, the 30-year-old still attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings when he can. "It's very important to go into the rooms of AA, smell the shitty coffee and be reminded that without sobriety, I would have no career, he told Rolling Stone in March. Now, he’s hoping his struggles with sobriety will inspire others to get help.

“If I have a gift in any capacity with words and I don’t use that power, I’m not doing my job,” he said in a statement. “I know that people are listening. People can be inspired to change and become better people.”
