"I think the show will go as long as the actors want the show to go," Julie told E! News at Comic-Con. "You know, look, everybody's under contract. I know that we've got plans for Season 6, we've got plans for Season 7. I know that our bosses have plans for Seasons 8, 9, and 10. I said I want to be part of it as long as I know I could keep telling good stories and as long as the ensemble people that I work with want to be there and are committed and dedicated. So, so far so good, you know. We'll see how long we can stay, doing it well. We'll make sure that we don't start sucking."
E! News goes on to say that if all three of the main stars were to renew their contracts, the show would have an excellent shot at getting picked up for Season 7. Sources also tell the site that the network might be cool with the show going on without the love triangle that made it famous, saying they’d consider shifting the focus to the other fan-favorite characters.
We’d hate to see anyone leave the show — especially Ian, Nina, or Paul — but all good things must come to an end at some point. The show has clearly moved beyond the love triangle and is entering exciting new territories this season. Heck, Damon is already on some other plane of existence and it’s pretty clear that Elena and Stefan will be friends from now on. Could the show go on without some or all of these three? It’s sad to say, but it definitely sounds like it.
