If nothing else, this shows how much Maks has learned the value of restraint. Even when Julianne suggested he was phoning in the Week 4 Switch Up dance just to get back to Meryl Davis, he just said, "That was definitely not the case, but thank you."
After the show, he stayed positive, tweeting, “Man oh man!!! @danicamckellar shined brighter than the brightest star tonight! No one noticed she danced without the track!!!” In her On the Red Carpet video with Maks, Danica said she had so much fun in their Jive, despite the technical mishaps. "I don't know what some of the comments..." she began, then let it trail off. Maks said he wishes he could've given Danica a higher score. "Her work deserved it." He's proud of himself, and Danica, because the music went wrong and she didn't miss a step, she went with it. He prepared her for that.
Both Maks and his brother Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Danica’s original partner, tweeted love and respect for each other, with Maks praising Meryl’s top-scoring Argentine Tango with Val, and Val honoring his mentor. In his OTRC video with Meryl, Val said they were glad to be able to represent for their team, which includes Maks and Danica, but also Charlie White, since he’s Meryl’s Olympic partner. On that note, Val added to OTRC, "I'm very, very upset with Charlie's [Rumba] scores and comments, I'm very upset about Maks's scores and comments."
But he’s not so upset that he’s ready to launch a Twitter war. He and Maks even held back Val’s Season 16 partner Zendaya when she was ready to jump in the fight to back the Chmerkovskiys. "Girl betta watch the way she talkin to my brother...lmao @MaksimC,” Zendaya tweeted after Julianne’s comments. Maks wrote to Z, “Hahaha! Love you sis! I got this tho.” Val also shared what Zendaya wrote, replying, “Keep your nails on boo, we got this.”
Julianne wants to keep her nails on, too. She had her own On the Red Carpet interview, briefly touching on her comments to Maks. "Nothing has been out of malice,” Julianne said. “I, honestly, it's about being honest and true. I love Maks. Every single one of these dancers are like my family. It’s never to dig or anything. It's also TV and it's fun. It's not supposed to be cruel. It's lighthearted."
Are you glad Maks seems to be taking this in stride? There was a time when less than this may have set him off, but he’s all Zen now. It looks good on him!
